Roundup of 21 Gluten-Free and Xanthan Free Dinner Roll Recipes

Published: Oct 13, 2015 by Christine · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

Xanthan gum. It's the culprit for countless stomach pains and unnecessary discomfort.

Unfortunately, xanthan gum is also an important ingredient in many gluten free bread recipes. It adds that chewy texture that makes bread so enjoyable. This is especially true of yeast-filled breads such as dinner rolls. But it’s not always necessary despite it being in many foods, gluten free or not.

Below are twenty-one dinner roll recipes from across the blogosphere that either don’t include xanthan gum or they offer an alternative. Thank you to all who allowed us to share recipes.

The Gluten Free Guide's dinner roll recipe makes a fluffy and cutesy addition to a soup or stew meal.

Gluten Free Jules recipe offers two options with this recipe, allowing the dough to be stretching into bread sticks or plopped into muffin tins as rolls. In place of xanthan, she combines vinegar, flaxseed eggs, and yogurt. The toppings are left up to the reader, displaying a wonderful picture of sesame seed sprinkled beauties.

Allergy Free Alaska offers two types of dinner rolls nix the xanthan gum. Their Yeast Free Flatbread Style Dinner Rolls are a tad flatter than what is normally expected, but with the chewy texture expected of glutinous rolls. In contrast, their Miracle Multigrain Rolls contain yeast, rise for an hour, and offer the nutty flavor of gluten free grain diversity.

Gluten Free on a Shoestring has a wonderful GF Lion House Dinner Rolls recipe is a shining example of a gluten free roll that tastes just like a glutinous one, all flaky and buttery and browned to perfection. They have yeast, and it’s recommended to let them rise slowly overnight in the refrigerator. (They can be prepared same day if you must.) Their unique shape is fun, reminiscent of a crescent or sweet roll.

Another dinner roll recipe we love from Gluten Free on a Shoestring is their GF Sweet potato Browned Butter Rolls. They’re as pretty as they are tasty, and the tuber adds fiber and texture to the bread.

Meaningful Eats has a GF Chia Dinner Roll Recipe that also happens to be egg-free and dairy-free. They’re a tad denser, more like a light biscuit, and use psyllium husk in the ingredient list rather than gum.

If you’re more a visual learner or enjoy a great cookie video, you’ll love this one Gluten Free Girl does on GF Dinner Rolls for Thanksgiving. She boosts a simple process, just a handful of ingredients that excludes xanthan gum, and the outcome is a flaky, buttery roll that fits right into its role of the festivities of the season.

If you’re looking for a simple dinner roll that also happens to be a paleo one, then Paleo Spirit's Paleo Dinner Roll with only six ingredients is just what you’re looking for. They bake as perfect little balls and don’t get very brown, but they are still tasty and will hit that bread craving just right.

Breville’s FoodThinkers presents a video and article by Chef Bryce Shuman depicting a wonderful dinner roll recipe. They also use guar gum in place of xanthan gum and also take advantage of several flours for texture while adding molasses for a richer sweetness.

Vegan Richa GF Pizza Dinner Rolls will strike a chord with anyone with adventurous taste buds. They mimic muffins with their savory garlic, sun dried tomatoes and caper flavor combination, plus Richa bakes them in a muffin tin. These would be wonderful with pasta or tomato based soups.

Though they are located over in the UK, Doves Farm has a GF Dinner Roll Recipe that will take you back to simpler times or at least make meal planning a cinch. They can also be flattened and sliced for sandwiches or burgers. These freeze great too!

Titus2homemaker's Gluten Free Whole Grain Yeast Rolls may be one of the “healthiest” ones on our list. Their aerated texture harks back to a cornbread muffin, fluffy and divine.

If biscuits are more your style, this recipe for vegan biscuits is perfect for your palette. They bake up tender, have a nice flake and just plain look delicious.

User Kelley on CandidSlice.com posted the article The Perfect Recipe For a Gluten Free Thanksgiving, where she used SarahBakesGFree.com's Gluten Free Honey Oat Bread Recipe to make biscuit-like rolls for special occasions.

Laurie of GlutenFreeYummy.com makes Gluten and Dairy Free Honey Oat Rolls that fluff up and peel apart after baking. Her trial and errors have equated to a hearty and fluffy roll that would be wonderful on a blistery day or a special occasion.

Potato bread is really wonderful, and Linda of FreeRangeCookies.com makes a delicious Gluten Free Potato Rolls. Their flavor and texture, as well as how well they brown up, will fool even your most gluten-loving eater.

The big difference between the above honey oat roll recipes and Gluten Free Hope’s Honey Oat Dinner Rolls is that they are also free of most other major food allergens (egg, dairy, soy, sugar, and nut). But even with these “restrictions,” Stephanie manages to get some serious texture and flavor into them and onto the preparer’s plate.

A wonderful gluten free and vegan option for dinner rolls was found in a forum on Chicagonow.com. The user Wannabe Lunch Lady put up her roll recipe up complete with pictures that make them seem a tad like a drop biscuit. If you lean towards a heartier dinner roll that you’ll be mopping up sauce with and don’t want any animal products in your food, consider this dinner roll for it.

And last, but not least is our dinner roll recipe, Melt-in-Your-Mouth Gluten-Free Dinner Rolls in a Bread Machine.

With the holidays just around the corner, now is the time to start experimenting with all those normally glutenized dishes, including the illusive and overused xanthan gum. Hopefully this list will make it easier for you to check dinner rolls off of your preparation list and still offer you an enjoyable, worry-free festive meal.
